Why are more Distro ISOs so large?
I've started trying out different distros (formerly using Ubuntu) and the first thing I noticed was a lot of them are 3-4+ GB in size.
I realize that these ISOs include a lot of software and repositories so that you don't have to download anything except bug fixes and such after you download it.. But why can't I just download linux, some drivers, and a browser and download all the other software I want when I want it?
Right now I'm trying to download slackware, and so more specifically, is there a way to get a slackware download that's a gigabyte or less?

making linux recognise my network card
I computer running fedora 12 was running on a wireless network card and one day it just stopped. I tried the build-in ethernet card as well as an PCL card. These do not work as well. I have tested that indeed it does not recognise both cards by typing ifconfig eth0 and ifconfig eth1 respectively. The message that I received was "device not found".
wireless problem with rt2870sta module in debian lenny
Hey
I'm trying to get my D-link wireless n USB mini adapter DWA-140 to work in debian lenny.
from the debian wiki I have found that the rt2870sta module should make this possible, so I followed the installation guide on:
http://wiki.debian.org/rt2870sta
when I get to step 5 without complains also did
Code: sudo modprobe rt2870sta which gives no output (I'm assume that's good)
but when I do sudo iwconfig I get:
Code: sudo iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions. Code: sudo ifconfig wlan0
wlan0: error fetching interface information: Device not found my /etc/network/interfaces:

About 700mb ram in use when idle. Also, how to strip?
I'm not sure why, but at boot, my LFS distro is using about 700mb after being logged in. I'm not sure what to do.
On another note. How can I strip debugging symbols and other unnecessary things from my system? I'm making an LFS livecd, and I'm already using a lot of disk space. I'm going to delete my source directories and tarballs, and also my tools directory.

[SOLVED] I can see mysql data at web page, but not at sql.
My database is "utf8" and "utf8_genral_ci" at phpmyadmin, but web program's charset is "euc-kr".
The problem is backup and restore.
The command "mysqldump -uroot -p --default-character-set=euc-kr mydb > /my-backup.sql" can produce backup sql, but I could not read and restoring does not works. Also " --default-character-set=utf8" shows same result.

This guide explains how to set up mod_chroot with Apache2 on an Ubuntu 10.04 system. With mod_chroot, you can run Apache2 in a secure chroot environment and make your server less vulnerable to break-in attempts that try to exploit vulnerabilities in Apache2 or your installed web applications.

Help regarding a Perl script
Hi,
I am new to Perl scripting. I need some ideas regarding a requirement.
That is I need to read file names and their size from folders and sub folders and if the size of the file is "0/ZERO" print out an error message saying "file size is zero with their file names".
Except I constantly have three files which are always zero so it should avoid these files and check the rest of them.
Thanks

system-config-bind unable to save
Hi, not sure why but I keep on getting the ERROR: Path is not writable when I'm trying to add a Slave Zone.
The server was commissioned by someone else and I remotely installed GNOME group, and vncserver as per the official CentOS instructions here.
Initially I tried using a normal (ie non root) user's credential for my VNC session. However, instead of asking me for my root password when I tried to open system-config-bind, it just doesn't load up. I ended up allowing the user "root" to connect to the server remotely via VNC, and was able to get system-config-bind to start.
However, I am now unable to save the settings, despite having done:
Code: cd /var
chmod -R 777 named Please help!

seeking HOWTO: access media cards on network printer
I use a network-connected HP printer through hplip and cups. Everything works well. Thanks to everyone for that. I'm trying to discover how to access the media card ports that are built-in on the printer.
Q1: Is there some way that my linux workstations can mount or otherwise access these flash-media cards?
If not, then,
Q2: Does anyone know about a network-connected, shared resource, multiple format media card device?
(My wireless router has a USB port for shared things, but I think
it will only play win-doze.)
Thanks,
~~~ 0;-Dan
