diplay all lines before a match is found

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - 6 hours 25 min ago
Hi all,

my problem is as follow...

I have a file, and I have to display all the lines from the beginning of the file till a matching string is found.

I know grep with "-a", "-b" as option does exist, but it needs the number of lines to be printed in advance.
eg grep -b 10 "search_string" file
so it will print 10 lines before a match is found.

seeking "tablet aware" features and applications

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - 6 hours 42 min ago
Every "laptop" has features and applications that happily work with a mouse pointer and a keyboard.

Some laptops are also considered a "tablet". They may have a mouse and keyboard, but they also have a stylus-pointer and might even have a touchScreen-pointer.

One clear "tablet" feature involves digital ink. One drags the stylus around an application. The app collects the dots as if one were writing on paper. xournal is a fine example of a digital ink application. While one can use a mouse to make the dots, the stylus feels exactly like pen&paper and thus is uniquely "tablet."

Given the digital ink paradigm, most of the drawing and sketching applications are then candidates as "tablet" applications.

Another clear "tablet" feature, when touch is available is movement from page to page with the flick of a finger. One might also do this with a stylus. This gesture lends itself to a "turn the page" behavior within book reader applications.
(I'm still looking for a good book-reader application.)

Please add your ideas about (1) tablet features, and (2) applications that use those features.

Merci d'avance,
~~~ 0;-Dan
Are there females on this forum?
Evertyhing indicates that bind sec. dns is working but it is not!
LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - 6 hours 55 min ago
Hi all,
I had this strange and quite stressy situation today. I change something in the config of the NS1 (primary nameserver) and because of that BIND9 went down. Seemed that, unfortunately, the sec. NS, NS2, did not took over.
When I first did /etc/init.d/bind9 reload I got this error:
Code: Stopping named: rndc: connection to remote host closed
This may indicate that
* the remote server is using an older version of the command protocol,
* this host is not authorized to connect,
* the clocks are not syncronized, or
* the key is invalid.
[FAILED] I was able to fix this. I guess I was because now the error has gone. I found the solution on some blog (I remember it has something to do with 'pkill lwresd' and restart bind a couple times.
Anyway, to test the NS1, on my local computer I set up the NS1 as primary and only nameserver. This works fine to test NSs.
This way I can surf the internet and ping the domains that are on the nameserver.
Now when I do the same with my NS2 I can't do nothing. Cannot ping to anything, surf of course works neither.
But from my server ifself, NS2, I can ping everything. Every NSlookup is done via an external nameserver thus logical.
Furthermore everything looks normal on the NS2. No errors, I can change, add, delete, apply, restart, reload without any problem.
I was thinking it had something to do with the rndc key (signing) maybe...
Thanks in advance!
Restore drive's HDparm factory parameters
Hi people! I have a little question as I have been testing hdparm's functions to see what it can do.
I'm using ubuntu 10.04 and I found out that the APM disk parameter to save power changes automatically when you change your power profile on ubuntu (128 and 253 are the values for battery and no battery respectively).
Surprisingly, I found out that these values remained after reboot (I checked this by showing the parameter values with hdparm from windows), and I have the feeling that those aren't the factory defaults.
So the question is if there is any way to restore this setting to it's default with hdparm or, if I have to ask the manufacturer about it's factory value.
Thanks in advance!
cannot login via ssh on a single, non root account - telnet ok
LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - 7 hours 18 min ago
a user called, cannot login - forgot the password - common case ( 200 user system )- but this one seems to be a bit different:
user tries to log in via ssh - login/passwd incorrect,
via telnet - no problem
tried a few different users on ssh - no problem...
It seems the access denied applies to just a single, standard user account - only via ssh, all other users are able to login...
tried also to change the passwd, no difference.
beside re-creating the account, can you think about anything else?
system: RHEL AS3, 2.4.21-51ELsmp
Thanks!
Can't play audio CD in latest Ubunu
LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - 7 hours 25 min ago
All,
K, here's a hardware problem (I think). When I pop an audio CD into my external USB DVD drive, the GUI finds it no problem, but if I pop it into my old internal CD drive, it is not found, however a data disk in the internal drive is found without trouble. Places>Computer> shows "CD drive" and "CD/DVD drive", however I have two old internal CD's, not just one.
What gives?
Ubuntu 9.04: USB Keyboard/Mouse Support for CAT5 KVM Dongle Not Wokring
LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - 7 hours 27 min ago
Hi All,
I have a two node, source/destination laboratory that I've built for testing at my place of employment. I have 4 servers on each side for different protocol testing: two Windows and two Linux, all daisy-chained through a CAT5 KVM switch. I obviously have network routers/switches in place as well, but that's irrelevant for this issue:
I am connecting the servers to the CAT5 KVM with CAT5 to DB-9 & USB Dongles. The DB-9 is the VGA and the USB is for mouse/keyboard support through the KVM. What I've found is that all of the Windows servers recognize the USB connection for keyboard/mouse (this connection also must be in place for the KVM to discover the server), and 1 Linux Server recognizes the USB connection. The other 3 Linux servers do not recognize the USB keyboard/mouse support portion of the dongle, and subsequently the KVM cannot discover them.
The server hardware should be identical on all servers, and I've set the BIOS/CMOS in all servers to mirror each other. Additionally, if I plug the USB portion of the dongle into one of the Windows servers and the VGA into the problematic Linux server, the KVM recognizes it (I can see it, but I obviously can't type or use the mouse). So I am confident beyond a reasonable doubt that this is an issue with USB Keyboard/Mouse support somewhere in my install of Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope on 3/4 of these.
It must be possible, however, because 1 of them works. I've checked portions of the working Linux Server to compare them against each other, and I can't find anything that really stands out or explains why it works and the rest don't. Hell, the working one doesn't even have any drivers installed on it.
The easy fix is to purchase a PS/2 Dongle. I've alreasy verified it can support it via PS/2, but I don't want to just band-aid the issue unless there is no other solution.
Any help is most appreciated.
KDE 4.5.x Stability?
very stable pretty much stable fairly stable not really stable quite unstable crashy as h*ll!
can't find /sbin/init, drops to busybox
LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - 7 hours 53 min ago
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 i386 on a K9M6PGM-2 mainboard with an AMD Phenom Triple core @ 2.3 gig. I have 2 gig of RAM and Lucid is on a 320 gig HDD, /dev/sda1 shared w/Win XP. I have in the SDC position an 80 gig with Ubuntu Karmic. Long before the Widows was installed this problem annoyed me. My hope was that by wiping GRUB out and rebuilding it from the Live CD that this problem would be fixed but after several boot process' the problem ihas returned.
When I boot into Karmic and look at /sbin I find the file init but of course cannot open it. Is there any way to fix this?
The nachine might boot into Lucid 3 or 4 days in a row with no problem and then refuse to boot anything but WinXP or Karmic. It seems not to be the GRUB as Wendoze and Karmic boot as expected.
At the /dev/sdb I find;
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdb1 * 1 9327 74919096 83 Linux
/dev/sdb2 9328 9729 3229034+ 5 Extended
/dev/sdb5 9328 9729 3229033+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
and do not know the origin of the partition.
Controlled Squid Proxy Rules
Hi All,
I am deploying a squid for my company, in which there will be three main groups. Group 1 having restricted access for sites, upload & download, Group 2 having restricted access only for download & uploading not for sites, Group 3 having no restriction at all. Please guide me if anyone have already worked on this. Restriction will only be IP based.
I have already deployed few rules:
acl Group1 src "/path/to/group1_ip_list"
acl Group2 src "/path/to/group2_ip_list"
acl Group3 src "/path/to/group3_ip_list"
acl filedownload rep_mime_type -i ^application/msword$ ^application/pdf$ ^application/vnd.ms-powerpoint$ ^application/vnd.ms-excel$ ^application/x-asap$ ^text/asp$ ^text/html$ ^application/x-asp$ ^application/zip$
reply_body_max_size 3145728 allow filedownload Group1
reply_body_max_size 7340032 allow filedownload Group2
request_body_max_size 500 KB allow Group1 all
request_body_max_size 500 KB allow Group2 all
reply_body_max_size 512000 allow Group1 all
reply_body_max_size 512000 allow Group2 all
http_access allow Group1
acl allowed_list url_regex "/path/to/sites.allowed"
acl denied_list url_regex "/path/to/sites.deny"
http_access allow allowed_list
http_access deny denied_list
http_access allow Group2
http_access deny all
Now, the problem is, I am not able to allow Group 3 for all, it is getting restricted somewhere. Where and with what permission should I place Group3 ?
Java threads, why does this work/not work?
Hi!
I'm writing a program to learn about threads in Java, consisting of one Main class and two different thread implementations (T1 and T2).
T2 is the one I have problems with. I have included a method in the class to allow me to pause the thread, and another method to stop the thread from running entirely. I've accomplished this by nesting a loop inside a loop in the run-method, and two booleans set by those methods I mentioned.
The problems is that if I pause the thread and then try to resume it it just won't do the things in the inner loop (as it should while not paused). But, and here comes the mystery, it works if I add a dummy line system.out.print(""); inside the outer loop. Further on, if I don't add the dummy line the thread won't terminate when told to and I can only exit the program by forcing it to.
Any ideas as to why it works, or doesn't work?
Platform: Mac OS X Snow Leopard, javac 1.6.0_20, java JRE 1.6.0_20-b02-279-10M3065
Here comes what I think is the relevant code...
Excerpt from Main.java - main-method
Code: T2 t2 = new T2(); //Create and start thread T2
Thread.currentThread().sleep(5000); //Wait...
t2.toggleRunning(false); //Pause the thread T2
Thread.currentThread().sleep(5000); //Wait...
t2.toggleRunning(true); //Resume running T2
Thread.currentThread().sleep(5000); //Wait...
t2.kill(); //Stop running T2 Excerpt from T2.java
Code: public class T2 implements Runnable {
 private Thread t = new Thread(this);
 private boolean alive;
 private boolean running;
 //Constructor: t.start(); alive = true; running = true;
 public void kill() {
  this.running = false;
  this.alive = false;
 }
 public void toggleRunning(boolean running) {
  this.running = running;
 }
 public void run() {
  while(this.alive) {
  System.out.print(""); // <<<<<****** DUMMY LINE
  if(this.running) {
    System.out.println("T2 running");
    try { Thread.currentThread().sleep(1000); } catch(Exception e) {}
  }
  }
} Any help appreciated! =)
//Nicholas
EDIT: I tried on Debian Linux now as well with javac 1.6.0_20 and java JRE 1.6.0_20-b02 - it works perfectly there - bug in the Mac version?
