getent does not work for usernames with numbers

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 13:26
Hi All,

Here is the output of getent, which I am finding strange.

Code: [3001@CDCTGIMCLSA ~]$ sudo getent passwd 3001 Also the exit status is 2

But the user 3001 exists in the system.

Code: [3001@CDCTGIMCLSA ~]$ cat /etc/passwd | grep 3001
3001:x:513:513::/home/3001:/bin/bash Also getent works well for usernames having alpabets.

Code: [3001@CDCTGIMCLSA ~]$ sudo getent passwd test
test:x:511:511::/home/test:/bin/bash I am finding it pretty amazing. Does anyone know why getent behaves like this ?

Server Applications Setup

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 13:24
Hey everyone,

I have been playing with Ubuntu Server for a bit and now I feel I am ready to take the next step and make my own business network for my small company. I would like to know if the following servers setup will do:

Server 1 - Domain Controller, OpenLDAP, DHCP
Server 2 - DNS
Server 3 - File and Print Server
Server 4 (DMZ) - Web Server
Server 5 (DMZ) - E-Mail Server

Of course Server 1, 2, and 3 will be in one box with VMWare and Server 4 and 5 in another box. Future plans are to expand my company so all of these services will need processor power.

Suggestions and recommendations would be appreciated. I know everything can run in one box, but want to keep it separate for both learning and processor power purposes. I hope all of this is making sense LOL.

DM-ioband

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 13:14
Hi,

I am a linux newbie. I was trying to install dm-ioband on a fedora 13 OS with Linux kernel 2.6.32.21. I apply the patch. Compile the modules and give module_install. When I do modprobe, it says dm-ioband module not found. When i checked the Kconfig file inside the drivers folder, i cannot find the dm_ioband patch applied to that file. As per the patch file, it should paste some 10+ lines in Kconfig file on line 320. But I dont find line 320. Can you please clarify and help me proceed? Thanks a ton .

Setting a Custom PS1 For Users?

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 13:04
I have a custom PS1 that I would like to use for my user account however when I view my users .bashrc file, there is no line entry there for 'PS1='. Can someone please tell me if I have my own custom user PS1 line entry, where do I place it so I can have some extra function and colors in my RHEL 5 system.

Thanks for any info.

Is Open Office phoning home?

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 13:04
OO.o 3.2 on Ubuntu 10.04

A couple of minutes ago I opened an OO.o spreadsheet while my network was disconnected from the Internet (restarting DSL modem). I noticed that OO.o was VERY slow to startup. Perhaps 15 - 20 seconds instead of the normal 2 -3 seconds. Once the Internet connection was back OO.o loads in the normal couple of seconds. I confirmed this by pulling the plug on the DSL modem. Again the OO.o load time is back to 15 - 20 seconds.

So I am wondering why OO.o is trying to access the Internet? I do not have any web links or other Internet related content in the spreadsheet in question. Can this be turned off? I hate programs which phone home without my permission

TIA,

Ken

You could try running: package-cleanup --problems

rpm -Va --nofiles --nodigest I don't even know where to begin with this one... Any suggestions?!

Problem with NVidia

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 12:32
Hi,

I'm using Sony Vaio VPCCW26FG (CW Series). It's graphic card is NVidia GeForce GT 330M. I use Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit as my operating system, dual boot with windows 7.
Recently I installed new driver from NVidia 256.53, but looks like this driver is not so stable on my notebook.
Sometimes the NVidia driver is successfully loaded, but sometimes its failed to load. (note: in windows 7 the graphic card has no problem)

Ubuntu 9.04 - Create Launcher Question

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 12:15
Hello everyone,

I tried to add a new launcher to a xfce panel on an Ubuntu 9.04. The problem is that I want to create a launcher for a .txt file - and the launcher does not give me the option of choosing "type". I read the following:

"Launcher Properties

When you create or edit a launcher, the following properties can be set:
Type Use the drop-down list to specify whether this launcher starts an application or opens a document:
Application The launcher starts an application.
Application in Terminal The launcher starts an application in a terminal.
File The launcher opens a file."

Problem is: I don't have this drop down menu from where I can choose the type. Is this because of the Ubuntu version/Panel version?

Any ideas how to solve this?

Thanks!

strange behaviour for strace -f

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 12:12
Ran into a weird situation I had not seen before while using strace -f command

I had to strace my 'passwd' command since I needed to debug something. But 'strace -f -o /tmp/file passwd' command failed to run

eraser@viper-laptop:~$ strace -f -o /tmp/passwd1 passwd
Changing password for eraser.
(current) UNIX password:
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
passwd: password unchanged

If I drop -f option it works fine. I am using Ubuntu 10.4(Lucid Lynx), recently switched from fedora to ubuntu.

Any idea what could be the issue ??

Mapping with series from master file and calculate count

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 12:08
Hi All,

My shell script is calculating the count of each shortcode series wise whose sample output is as follows:

Code:
--------------------------
56882

9124 1
9172 1
9173 4
8923 6
9175 1
9058 2
7398 2
--------------------------
58585
series count
9124 1
8858 17
9061 21
9125 21
9126 7
9171 106
9172 4
7899 4
9173 7
9175 14
9059 92
7871 94
7396 183
7398 386
9060 13
--------------------------
58888
series count
9124 12
8858 2
9061 44
9125 36
9062 139
9171 20
9126 17
9172 94
9173 84
7899 113
8923 76
9175 59
9058 101
7870 327
7871 36
9059 24
7396 19
9122 202
7398 55
9060 62
--------------------------
57575
series count
8858 6
9124 6
9061 5
9062 26
9125 11
9171 5
9126 43
9172 14

8923 46
9175 71
7871 6
9059 13
7396 28
9122 17
7398 37
9060 15
--------------------------
57677
series count
9175 5

Code for generating above output is as follows:

Code:
Ydate=`date -d'-1 days' +'%Y-%m-%d'`
shortcodes=( "56882" "58585" "58888" "57575" "57677" );
for shortcode in ${shortcodes[@]}
do
        echo "--------------------------";
        echo $shortcode;
        echo "series count";
        grep "ShortCode=tel:${shortcode}" /opt/bea/ocsg_4.1/logs/customlogs/App_OP.log.$Ydate | awk -F"|" '{ arr[substr($2,1,4)]++ } END { for( no in arr) { print no , arr[no] } }'
done

And i have one master file whose data is as follows:

Code:
9059 North

7398 South

9175 North

9122 South

9175 North

7871 South

Now I want to map each series count with its Region mention in the master file and calculate the count region wise like following:

Code:
--------------------------
57677

North 5

South 0

--------------------------
57575

North 178
South 200

--------------------------
58888

North 123
South 109
Please help me in modifying my scipt for getting the above output

Thanks in advance.

changes to desktop effects freezes the screen

LinuxQuestions.org latest posts - Tue, 09/07/2010 - 12:07
Recently I installed Arch linux and Kde for the WM.
I am currently using "KDE Platform Version 4.5.1 (KDE 4.5.1)"
The desktop effects "composting" works but everytime I make a small change to any of the settings the screen freezes for an idefinite amount of time! and when this happens I have to do ctrl+alt+F1 and go to the command line and kill X and then re-enable composting !
Can anyone tell me why this is happening? what should I do to rectify this?

I am having an Intel onboard G41 chipset.
I installed "xf86-video-intel" driver.
Edit: I changed the xf86-video-intel to xf86-video-intel-newest from AUR
